How to make a YouTube thumbnail
A thumbnail has one small job: make the subject of your video clear at a glance. Begin with the idea viewers should notice, then choose a composition that gives that idea room.
1. Pick a layout for the idea
Open the template library and filter by category or style. Cinematic layouts put attention on the scene; bold reaction layouts emphasize an expression; minimal layouts give one object space. Choose based on your story rather than a creator's name. You can replace every scene photo and edit the separate layers.
2. Write a readable headline
Try one short thought instead of repeating the whole video title. For a tutorial, “FIX BAD AUDIO” communicates a concrete result more quickly than a paragraph of features. The wording should be supported by the actual video. Use the phone preview to check whether the headline is still readable.
For Hindi, choose a font marked for Hindi support. If the selected Latin font does not include Devanagari glyphs, the editor uses a fallback. Check the entire word after changing size or weight; do not assume every font has a genuine bold weight.
3. Replace photos and set the background
Use Add your photo to replace the presenter. A transparent PNG keeps a cutout; a JPG keeps its rectangular background. Background removal is not automatic. Use Fill/crop and the focal-point sliders to position the subject. Select a solid colour, a gradient or an uploaded scene from the Background & photo panel.
Text, presenter and graphic layers stay separate. Objects within a background photograph are not separate layers. Use your own or licensed imagery when publishing; source attribution alone does not give reuse permission.
4. Choose the canvas size
| Editor format | Export dimensions | Use |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 thumbnail |
| Reels / Shorts | 1080 × 1920 | Vertical cover |
| Instagram feed | 1080 × 1350 | Portrait post |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 | Square cover / post |
These are this editor's working sizes. YouTube currently recommends higher-resolution source thumbnails, accepts JPG/PNG, and has upload limits that vary by device. Verified accounts can upload a Shorts cover in desktop Studio. Check YouTube's current thumbnail guidance before publishing. Crop guides in this tool are approximate.
5. Check and export
Review the phone preview, spelling, photo crop and foreground/background contrast. Export JPG for a smaller file or PNG when lossless graphics matter. Save project stores an editable JSON file; downloading a JPG alone does not preserve the layers.
If an export fails
Wait for Live preview before downloading. If a font or photo failed to load, replace that image or reload after saving your project. Use PNG, JPG or WebP uploads under 12 MB. A saved project must be compatible JSON under 30 MB. If automatic saving is unavailable, use Save project before leaving.
Next: prepare two thumbnail variations, or start creating.
PNG or JPG: which thumbnail format should you use?
Choose JPG for photo-heavy thumbnails when you want a smaller file. Choose PNG for sharp text, flat graphics or lossless output. Check the downloaded file size before uploading; repeatedly exporting a JPG can introduce compression artifacts. Keep the editable project so future changes start from the original layers.
A simple thumbnail checklist
- One clear subject and a headline that matches the video.
- Readable text at small preview size, with enough contrast against the scene.
- A crop that keeps the face or product visible in the chosen format.
- Your own or licensed photos and artwork.
- A saved editable project and a checked JPG or PNG export.
